Hi. Has anyone tried this? http://textsl.org ? I have a sighted friend who was telling me about Second Life, a platform for virtual world creation, etc. Text SL is supposedly a command-line interface for it. I'm curious, but wanted to get some input from you guys before I get too involved.
tried it, really, its not worth it.
In what way did it disappoint you, Cold Shadow?
If you're going to have a text version of SL, why not just make a MUSH? People can just log into those with a terminal or favorite client.
I was kind of hoping for a multimedia element, like soundscape or something. If I read text, I'd much rather read a book. Sorry, I guess I've been spoiled by audio games, and I don't mean to offend anyone. It's just my personal taste. I am curious as to how it's a bad idea. My friend plays on the regular site, and I was thinking about trying it and meeting up with his avatar. Still considering.
So, we can't sign up for this game, or someting?
It's very visual on the standard site, which is why someone created the text-based version. I honestly haven't tried the standard site yet. But it's 3D and all, so might play havoc with screen-readers.
I don't see how the standard SL would work with any screen reader. Maybe the client login dialogue and a few other things would work, but it's all about the graphics.
I gave the text version a try. Having gotten a basic character and gone through the tutorial, I can move around and describe things, but cannot seem to interact with any object or person. The included voice is slow slow and choppy, I just ignore it and use the voice of my screen reader. There doesn't seem to be audio content so far, but I know there is some music, ambience, and talking in the full-fledged SL experience.
Thanks. Yes, I've heard about people doing events, such as concerts on SL. I also saw a demo of someone chatting with another user by using the say command. thanks again for the input.
you're limited in the extreme on what you can really do, through the text client when I tried it, yes you could move around and talk to people, but that is the extent really of what a text based client on that game right now, allows you to do.
What is this anyways? A chatting game of sorts? A build your own world game?
Second Life is a graphical virtual world. You can guild characters, interactive objects, places, games, whatever you like, especially when you pay real money for pieces and privileges. People who ue the graphical client can have audio-video streams, voice chat, sound effects, you name it.
